Why This Comparison Matters for Installers

As a professional installer or system integrator, the BESS technology you specify directly affects your project risk, installation workflow, and long-term relationship with the customer. Lithium-ion systems have been the default for a decade, but the technology landscape is changing. Belinus graphene supercapacitor systems present a fundamentally different value proposition — one that reduces installation complexity, eliminates fire safety engineering, and delivers a system that will not need cell replacement during the warranty period.

This article provides a direct technical comparison between the Belinus Energywall G1 and a representative commercial lithium iron phosphate (LFP) BESS, across the parameters that matter most to installers: cycle life, depth of discharge, temperature tolerance, safety, installation, warranty, and levelised cost of storage.

Cycle Life: 50,000 vs 6,000

Cycle life is the single most important determinant of long-term system value. The Belinus Energywall G1 is rated for 50,000 full charge-discharge cycles. A typical commercial LFP system is rated for 4,000 to 6,000 cycles under the same conditions — usually defined as cycles at 25 °C ambient temperature, 0.5C charge/discharge rate, to 80 % remaining capacity.

In practical terms, this means a lithium system cycled once daily reaches end of life in 11 to 16 years. If the system is cycled twice daily — common in tariff arbitrage applications — lifetime drops to 5 to 8 years. The Energywall G1, even at two cycles per day, delivers over 68 years of service before reaching rated cycle count. For the installer, this eliminates the single most common source of warranty disputes and customer dissatisfaction: premature capacity degradation.

The 50,000-cycle rating also opens applications that are economically impractical with lithium. Frequency regulation, micro-cycling for voltage support, and rapid charge-discharge for industrial peak management all involve multiple partial cycles per day. With lithium, these applications consume cycle budget rapidly. With graphene supercapacitors, the cycle budget is effectively unlimited for any realistic commercial application.

Depth of Discharge: 100 % vs 80 %

Lithium-ion systems are typically limited to 80 % depth of discharge (DoD) by the battery management system to protect cell longevity. Discharging beyond 80 % accelerates degradation and voids most manufacturer warranties. This means a 100 kWh lithium system delivers only 80 kWh of usable energy.

The Energywall G1 supports 100 % DoD with no degradation penalty. A 100 kWh Belinus system delivers 100 kWh. For the installer, this has two implications. First, the customer gets the full rated capacity, which simplifies system sizing and matching to load profiles. Second, there is no need to oversize the battery to compensate for unusable capacity, which reduces footprint and installation cost.

Operating Temperature Range

Lithium-ion performance and safety are tightly coupled to temperature. LFP cells are typically rated for operation between -20 °C and +55 °C, but charging below 0 °C causes lithium plating — a dangerous condition that permanently damages cells and creates internal short circuit risk. Most LFP systems therefore incorporate heating elements that consume stored energy to warm cells before charging in cold conditions.

The Energywall G1 operates from -40 °C to +65 °C with no performance derating and no charging restrictions at low temperatures. For installers working in unheated industrial environments, underground parking structures, or outdoor installations in Belgian winters, this eliminates the need for heated enclosures, insulated cabinets, or derating calculations. It also means the system does not waste stored energy on self-heating, which improves effective efficiency in cold weather.

Safety Profile and Fire Classification

This is where the technologies diverge most sharply. LFP batteries, while safer than NMC chemistries, still carry thermal runaway risk. They contain flammable electrolyte and can undergo exothermic decomposition under fault conditions. Installation standards in Belgium — and increasingly across Europe — require fire-rated enclosures, minimum clearances from combustible materials, ventilation systems, and in many jurisdictions, automated fire suppression. These requirements add cost, complexity, and permitting time to every installation.

The Energywall G1 uses no volatile electrolyte. There is no thermal runaway mechanism. The system cannot experience self-sustaining exothermic decomposition under any foreseeable fault condition. For the installer, this means standard electrical cabinet mounting, no fire-rated enclosure, no specialised ventilation, and significantly faster permitting. Indoor installations in occupied buildings — office basements, retail back-of-house, hospital plant rooms — are straightforward rather than exceptional.

Installation Complexity

A typical commercial lithium BESS installation involves coordinating electrical work, fire safety engineering, structural assessment for floor loading, ventilation design, and often a separate fire suppression subcontractor. Lead times for fire safety permits in some Belgian municipalities can add 8 to 16 weeks to the project timeline.

The Energywall G1 is installed like standard electrical distribution equipment. The system connects to the AC coupling point via a bi-directional inverter and communicates with the Belinus Smart EMS over Ethernet or RS485. Mounting is wall-mounted or floor-standing, depending on the model. No fire safety engineering is required. No specialised ventilation is needed. Typical installation time for a commercial Energywall G1 system is 1 to 2 days for a qualified electrical contractor.

For the Energycabinet N1, Belinus provides pre-configured modular cabinets that arrive on site with cells, inverter, and EMS pre-integrated. The installer connects AC power, communications, and configures the system through the Belinus commissioning app. This plug-and-play approach reduces on-site engineering to a minimum.

Warranty: 20 Years vs 10 Years

Most commercial LFP BESS manufacturers offer a 10-year warranty, often with a throughput limitation (expressed in MWh) that can be consumed well before 10 years in high-cycling applications. When the throughput limit is reached, the warranty is exhausted — even if 10 years have not passed.

Belinus warrants the Energywall G1 for 20 years with no throughput limitation. The warranty covers capacity retention above 80 % of rated capacity for the full 20-year period. For installers, this provides a warranty that matches or exceeds the customer’s expected investment horizon, reducing post-installation support burden and strengthening the commercial proposition.

Levelised Cost of Storage

The levelised cost of storage (LCOS) is the total cost per kWh of energy discharged over the system lifetime, including upfront cost, maintenance, replacements, and efficiency losses. For a 250 kWh commercial system evaluated over 20 years at a 6 % discount rate:

An LFP system with €350/kWh installed cost, 6,000-cycle life, 80 % DoD, 95 % efficiency, and one cell replacement at year 12 yields an LCOS of approximately €0.12 to €0.15 per kWh discharged. A Belinus Energywall G1 with comparable installed cost, 50,000-cycle life, 100 % DoD, 99 % efficiency, and no replacement yields an LCOS of approximately €0.06 to €0.08 per kWh discharged.

This 40 to 50 % LCOS advantage is driven primarily by the elimination of cell replacement cost and the higher usable energy per cycle. For installers presenting to cost-conscious commercial customers, this is a decisive argument.

Next Steps for Installers

Belinus operates an installer partner programme with technical training, design support, and priority access to engineering documentation. Partners receive the Belinus System Design Toolkit, which generates system sizing, ROI projections, and installation specifications from a customer’s load profile and energy contract data. To join the programme, contact the Belinus commercial team or request an installer information pack through the website.
